Are you a Registered Volunteer?

By: Ms. Pamela B. Rachal, ACS Volunteer Coordinator

National Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 17th-23rd of 2022. Since most organizations are still following social distancing directives of their state or local government, organizations may have to continue to rethink their normal celebrations. However, we want to take a special opportunity to thank each volunteer for their tireless devotion to the military community. It makes a difference to all who live and work on Fort Gordon.

Volunteering is an essential expression of human relationships and can be a person's basic need to participate in their community or feel a sense of mattering to others. Volunteering has excellent benefits which include:
• Networking
• Flexible hours
• Making new friends
• Learning new skills
• Maintaining skills
• Enhancing your resume
• Earning promotion points

The demand for volunteers has not decreased - even during the COVID pandemic. Many have and still volunteer without having registered as statutory volunteers with ACS' Volunteer Management Information System (VMIS). Modern VMIS 2.0 thru the Army Family Web Portal (AFWP) assists with tracking volunteers, their hours, and other information. The VMIS program allows volunteers to keep volunteer hours, awards, training, volunteer service ribbons, and certificates in their Volunteer Service Record. Volunteers can also upload other documents such as college and scholarship applications, job applications, and resumes. Regulation AR 608-1, para.5-9n, states "all volunteers must use this program." Without being registered in the system, you cannot receive credit for hours served.

There are so many volunteer opportunities at Fort Gordon. Some of these opportunities are event-driven, seasonal, and even occur on weekends. If you are interested in finding out more about the volunteer program at Fort Gordon, register for a Volunteer Orientation class. Classes are held at the Family Outreach Center on the first Wednesday of each month from 10-11am. Reservations are required. Contact Ms. Pamela B. Rachal at 706-791-8358 or at pamela.b.rachal.civ@army.mil for more information.

To become a statutory volunteer:
1. You must register in VMIS at https://www.armyfamilywebportal.com.
2. Complete, sign, and maintain on file a DD Form 2793.
3. Attend an ACS Volunteer Orientation before working in an approved volunteer position.

Honor volunteers in each organization, workplace, and community to let them know we "Salute" their heartfelt dedication and commitment to our community. We recognize and appreciate those who volunteer as being integral to our organizations.
